Get out your pipes and magnifying glasses, Sherlock HOLES is on the case. This week we're joined by our good friend Detective Gigi to look into these matters on Alan Rudolph's INVESTIGATING SEX, aka INTIMATE AFFAIRS. We get into the film's setting, its depiction of real surrealist artists and intellectuals, Andre Breton, post-WWI artists and philosophers, their bankrolling by the upper class, the characters' posturing and the women they've hired to transcribe their arcane discussions, incel behavior, sex demons, and how this film speaks not just to the 2020s, but to 2001 and the 1920s. Also, don't forget to WRITE INTO THE MAILBAG, we'll answer all of your questions when we wrap up on Alan Rudolph in a few weeks.

SuperGOOD is the way we'd describe this episode!! Joined by our friend John (@fender_belly), we get into the first two episodes of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's latest project THE STUDIO. We see if these rumors of it being a modern twist on Robert Altman's THE PLAYER are true, talk Thomas Pynchon's upcoming novel SHADOW TICKET, PTA/Vineland, the modern Hollywood landscape, TV comebacks, art and commerce, Sony email leaks, Frank Lloyd Wright buildings, Food Fight, and in general we beat the dead horse of why capitalism sucks...MUCH to consider...

In 1973, Kurt Vonnegut releases his much awaited follow up to Slaughterhouse-Five. Just one year later, off the tails of Buffalo Bill and the Indians, Robert Altman tasks Alan Rudolph with writing him a script based on this book, Breakfast of Champions. His one direction being, "don't follow the book", advice that would be echoed by Kurt Vonnegut himself. The project slowly fizzles away into the dustbin... until 1999. This week we're talking Alan Rudolph's BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS, starring Bruce Willis as Dwayne Hoover. We take a trip to Alan-Town to talk about the new Choose Me 4K, this film's recent 4K restoration, then we get into Vonnegut talk, how this film and the book find common ground, car dealers in the Bush era, late capitalism and the "self-made" owner class, and also a lot of joking around!Write in to the mailbag for our finale episode!Follow Altmania:Linktreeestebannoel.comAltman / Rudolph archiveSupport us on Patreon:patreon.com/altmania

Joining us at our big, round podcast table for Alan Rudolph's dive into historical drama - from Pacino Pod, it's Jane Altoids! We talk about Rudolph reuniting with Robert Altman, the Algonquin roundtable, how Bob got two different studios to bankroll this, the copius research and method that went into creating this whole thing, and how that's maybe the least interesting part of what makes this a good film, and what Jennifer Jason Leigh brings to playing Dorothy Parker.Follow Jane Altoids:Pacino Podhttps://www.patreon.com/pacinopodhttps://x.com/staticbluebathttps://letterboxd.com/staticbluebat/Follow Altmania:LinktreeEste's WritingAltman/Rudolph ArchiveSupport us on Patreon:patreon.com/altmania

I'm seeing double... FOUR Matthew Modines! You've already guessed it, it's a movie we've been anticipating in this series based on it's bizarre premise alone - that doesn't actually turn out to be as weird as you'd think. Joined by our new pal Etan Weisfogel, a writer, occasional critic, and certified Rudolph Enjoyer. He helps us break down EQUINOX - a film about twin Matthew Modines seperated at birth that has big things to say about class, connection in a broken world, urban decay, the lottery, and disassociative mental conditions - thank god we've solved all that stuff and can just look back and laugh. In 1991, Alan Rudolph receives a call from Demi Moore ONE day before they're about to shoot this little movie she's producing, MORTAL THOUGHTS. The original director's been fired, the production company is gonna pull back the money unless they can get someone in under the wire, what are they gonna do?? Well, get yourself a gun, and let's head on over to Jersey town to tune into this week's episode, and find out exactly what happens. Alan Rudolph being knighted as Captain-Save-a-Film, New Jersey accents, Bruce Willis and Demi Moore's razor-sharp instincts, how he managed to imprint his own touch on it in a matter of days. All of this and sooo much more on ALTMANIA:FRIENDS OF BOB.

Live at Largo, it's LOVE AT LARGE. The Alan Rudolph movie that feels vaguely like Trouble in Mind, transplanted to a 1990s Portland, with an added hitchcock-ian "wrong man" story, that is also a screwball comedy, and Tom Berenger talks like Beetlejuice, and there's a cameo even more insane than Divine in TiM. So what did we think of it? Well, perhaps one of us was more into it than the other, but the only way to truly unlock that secret, you gotta listen to the dang episode you nonce! I'm not gonna spoil the episode right here, what are you crazy?Follow Altmania:LinktreeRead Este's New Short!Altman / Rudolph ArchiveSupport us on Patreon:patreon.com/altmania

From all the times we say "postmodern" on the show, we finally get to POST Moderns, Alan Rudolph's THE MODERNS, from 1988. The Altmania boys are together at last, recording in the same room, and now have to make eye contact with each other. Scary stuff. We manage to get through it as we talk about Este's trip up to Seattle, Scarecrow video, eating Doritos, watching this movie together + the documentary film packaged in the blu ray, art and artifice, recreating myths, Keith Carradine painting, so much awesome stuff to get into with THE MODERNS

From podcast to GODcast! That’s right, folks, today we’re covering the 2003 Tom Shadyac film BRUCE ALMIGHTY. And this week's guest is a match made in heaven for this show, it's our research comrade and friend-in-Rudolph, Jason Miller! He checks in with us as we cross the halfway mark on our Alan Rudolph series. We see how good of a job we're doing, key players we should keep an eye out for, and we talk about some COOL unproduced works from the director himself. From there, we dive into this fascinating movie, how much fun it has with dream logic, the "heaven movie genre", Rudolph cutting the budget to do more clever effects. Fantastic movie, listen in!Follow Jason Miller:https://x.com/bronco7732Follow Altmania:LinktreeAltman/Rudolph Archivehttps://estebannoel.comSupport us on Patreon:https://patreon.com/altmania

We knew this guy was trouble when he walked in, it's Aaron from the Hit Factory Podcast returning to discuss Alan Rudolph's 1985 neo-noir set-in-the-past-but-also-in-the-future, shot right there in beautiful Seattle, it's TROUBLE IN MIND. We get into some overall Rudolph discussion and share some big PTA news, before we jump right in with Keith Carradine in cool suits and funky hair, Divine, the Reagan '80s, prosperity in the US, and Ryan peppers in some fun Seattle facts as we get into the first hometown feature for his half of the show. It's a lot of fun, you do NOT want to miss it, truly.Follow Hit Factory: https://x.com/HitFactoryPodhttps://www.patreon.com/hitfactorypodFollow Altmania:LinktreeEste's WritingAltman / Rudolph ArchivesSupport us on Patreon:https://patreon.com/altmania
